How is a student admitted to SIU as Exploratory-Provisional?

The program admission committee reviews Exploratory-Provisional applications and conducts a holistic review which includes factors such as high school transcript information, standardized test scores, and a personal statement. All students who are determined to be eligible for admission will be mailed contracts. After students return their contracts, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions will notify students that they are officially admitted into the Exploratory-Provisional program.

How is a student admitted to SIU as Exploratory-Undecided?

The most common way that students are admitted as Exploratory-Undecided is by indicating on your SIU application that you are undecided. You may also be in the department if you are seeking acceptance into a selective admissions program. Several majors at SIU have special admission requirements or an additional application.

Can you please explain Exploratory Student Advisement advising services?

Students approved for admission into ESA are advised into courses selected from the SIU Core Curriculum requirements. Students are advised throughout their first year in school by professional academic advisors who help them select courses for the first two semesters of their freshman year and for the fall semester of the sophomore year. When students meet with their ESA advisor for their third semester class selection, the advisor informs students of the process for petitioning out of ESA and into the major of their choice.

What type of orientation do new students receive?

New Student Orientation (NSO) is a one-day program for new SIU students and their families and supporters. After NSO, you'll know what to expect on your first day of classes. NSO will make sure you are ready to make the most of your time when you first arrive on campus and throughout your academic career. How do I satisfy my Exploratory-Provisional program requirements?

The Exploratory-Provisional program opportunity requires students to remain in the program throughout their freshman year and complete all program requirements. Students may not transfer to another academic unit until after they successfully complete UCOL 101A, have a 2.0 cumulative GPA, and fulfill the academic unit requirements of their preferred major.

UCOL 101: Saluki Success is SIU's dynamic and exciting first-year experience course! We encourage you with SIU's admonition to "know no bounds.” This is a required, one or two credit hour course which meets a Core Curriculum requirement. Is tutoring available?

Yes! Tutoring is encouraged and is available for all SIU students through the Center for Learning Support Services. The Center for Learning Support Services assists students of all cultures, abilities, backgrounds, and identities with becoming self-regulated learners who continually work to improve their academic performance through tutoring, academic coaching, and test preparation workshops. You may request a tutor by visiting their website at tutoring.siu.edu or by going to the Center for Learning Support Services on the seventh floor of Morris Library.

Whom do I call if I have a question about the bill from the University?

The Office of the Bursar is your source of information regarding your SIU bill. This office is committed to excellence in providing financial services to students and the Southern Illinois University community. Is there someone on campus that a student can talk to about personal problems?

The staff at the Counseling Center can help. The mission of the Counseling Center is to provide mental health-related services to facilitate students’ adjustment to college and their personal and psychological growth in becoming high functioning and socially responsible adults. The staff works to help students resolve problems that interfere with personal, social, and academic functioning while also emphasizing prevention, development, adjustment, and wellness. Who does a student contact regarding a roommate problem?

Residence Life staff are available in each building to help mediate roommate conflicts. Students should talk to their Resident Advisor regarding any problems within the residence halls or contact University Housing at (618) 453-2301.

What services are available for students who are struggling in their classes?

If a student needs to be out of school for a death or medical reason, how should the teachers be notified?

Student Absence Notifications can be provided to instructors at any time during the semester by the Transitional Programs office in the event a student must miss class for reasons of illness, family emergency, or other personal situations.

A student wishing to utilize this service should contact Transitional Programs. While the instructor will then be provided a notification with the reason for the student's absence, it is up to the instructor to determine if the absence will or will not be considered as excused.

Transitional Programs can be contacted at (618) 536-2338 and letters will be sent to all of the student’s instructors. We also encourage the student to personally contact the instructors to determine what assignments need to be completed.

How do students find out what on-campus positions are available?

The Student Employment Program provides information about a variety of jobs available throughout campus and is administered by the Financial Aid Office. Students are paid on an hourly basis, usually at the SIU minimum wage rate, and normally work an average of 15 hours per week. Financial Aid has a job board that lists all of the available positions. How much do textbooks cost?

According to the local bookstores, the average cost of books per semester is between $300 and $500.
