EXPLORATORY—UNDECLARED

The Exploratory Student — Undeclared program (EXPU) is the academic home for students who have been admitted to the University but have not yet chosen their major.  EXPU provides a personal academic advisement experience for their students.  Advisors contact EXPU students throughout the semester to ensure that their classes are progressing successfully and they are on track for timely graduation.  They also provide end-of-semester review reports of the students' academic progress.  This close relationship between student and EXPU advisor ensures that students stay on track, completing classes required for potential majors without accruing additional and unnecessary time at the University. Students will work with graduate assistants to assist them with on career exploration.

EXPU Students are:

• Students who are interested in learning more about the numerous majors SIU has to offer
• Students who are interested in several areas but want to take time to declare a major
• Students who have decided on a major but have not met the admission requirement for that specific department
• Students who declared a major in a program but have decided to seek a new major

EXPU Students will:

• Work with their Academic Advisor to schedule classes
• Create a personal academic plan to identify their area of interest
• Have access to tutors and academic coaches in the Center for Learning Support Services
• Connect with the Career Development office to explore career options
• Have a graduate assistant to help them transition to college
• Have resources across campus that provide additional services
• Connect with Recruitment and Retention Coordinators to begin the transition to their College of choice
